I built a pair of small cellular devices which send messages with one purpose: to meet up for a pint. They act functionally as a pager, but I found a specialized microcontroller with a built-in MicroSIM holder and antenna. This means it uses modern cellular towers, and can transmit its message anywhere, anytime.

  1. Hardware stack.
  2. A diagram of the wiring.
  3. The microcontroller and its components. This SIM card has 500MB of data, and ten years of service with a one-time payment.
  4. Some components are connected via female jumper cables to male pins; others I soldered together. All of the wires had to be trimmed, stripped, twisted, soldered for reinforcement, and insulated with heat shrink.
  5. The two devices assembled and working.
  6. A rendering of the 3D printed case.
  7. Bit of software.
  8. The OLED screen cycles through these messages.
